The Discipleship Gap in the American Church

We feel it. You feel it. Our nation sees the results of it. Our future generations feel it. But what do you do?

You know you’re called. You’ve heard it in prayer. You’ve sensed it in moments with God. And yet, your life does not fully reflect what you know is inside of you. Tim and I have been there.

You are still struggling with the same patterns. You still react the same way under pressure. You still feel stuck between what you believe and how you live.

This is not a calling problem.

It is a discipleship problem.

America does not have a shortage of information. It has a shortage of disciples. The modern Church has trained people to hear truth without being formed by it. As a result, many believers are informed but not transformed. We are in information overload! All while being relationally malnourished. Discipleship needs community. Discipleship is not a class or a program. It is not something you complete and move on from. Discipleship is a lifestyle of formation. It is the daily process of becoming like Christ in how you think, respond, and live. Whether you realize it or not, you are always being discipled. Your habits disciple you. Your environment disciples you. Your thought patterns disciple you. Your relationships disciple you. The question is not if you are being discipled—it is what is shaping you. Tim and I have spent time diving into what has shaped us! What areas did we put our discipleship on cruise control? What areas did we get comfortable? Apathy doesn’t just happen; it happens over time, and yes, when a discipleship void is present. It happens to so many when life gets busy and routine. Isn’t it ironic?

This is why many believers remain stuck. In moments of pressure—when we are tired, offended, or challenged—more often than we care to admit it, we do not respond like Jesus. We may respond from old patterns that were never confronted or retrained. That gap between what we know and how we live is where discipleship has been missing. Here is the truth that we have found.

Scripture makes it clear that storms are not optional; they are promised. What determines whether someone stands is not the storm, but the foundation they have built. A life that is only informed by truth will collapse under pressure. A life that is formed by truth will stand.

This is where discipline becomes essential.

The Church has emphasized hearing the Word but has often neglected living the Word. This has produced believers who know truth but do not walk in authority. Sadly, we have not always taught it or made it practical teaching. When pressure comes, most fall back into patterns that were never transformed. Many have not seen what it looks like to “walk in authority”, occupying the cities and atmospheres we are called to. Standing firm in decreeing and declaring who we are as joint-heirs in Christ! It’s time we know what this looks like and activate it, daily.

If the American Church is going to awaken, we must put the Word into action.

We do not need louder voices. We need transformed lives. We need believers who do not just hear the Word but are formed by it. We need disciples who live what they say they believe and can, practically, model it. After all, people are watching.

This is not about striving harder. It is about submitting fully. It’s about confidentally walking out our life in Christ.

We are here to tell you, you are not behind. You have simply been building without formation.
